Power BI Workbook Deployment

This describes deploying a DataSelf workbook with reports and dashboards to a Power BI Service tenant.

Manual Deployment

Requirements:

  • The user must have Admin or Member rights to the Power BI Tenant.

    • If it’s a guest user: Admin or Member rights to the Workspaces to publish the model.

    • Should have received the Tenant URL (from the Tenant’s About Power BI page).

  • Power BI Desktop Pro or Premium license.

  • Access to DataSelf workbook templates (GitHub).

Publish the Workbook to the Power BI Service

  1. Run Power BI Desktop Pro (blank, without opening any file).

  2. If the user is a guest user of the Power BI Service (otherwise skip to 3):

    1. Sign in to your regular Power BI Service first by clicking the Sign in on the top right.

    2. Sign out by clicking your name on the top right → Sign out.

    3. Click Sign in → Continue to the dialog with your email → User another account → Sign-in options → Sign-in to an organization → enter the domain name of the organization (e.g., dev.dataself.com) → Next → click your email. This Power BI Desktop should now be connected to the proper PBI Service Tenant.

    4. Go to item 4 below (skip 3.).

  3. If the user is from the Power BI Service tenant (same domain) with Admin or Member rights:

    1. If your PBI Desktop is not signed in yet, do so by clicking Sign in on the top right.

  4. Power BI Desktop should now show Home and Open on the left panel. Click Open → Browse this device → find and open the workbook to publish.

  5. Click Edit → select the proper model → Create. You should now see the report with some good data.

  6. Click Publish → Save → select the proper Workspace → Select → wait until you get a success message.

  7. Use the Tenant URL to check if the workbook has been published and works as expected.
